International Sanctuary founder, Stephanie Pollaro, had never heard of human trafficking when she read an article addressing the global horror and highlighting in India (Asia's largest sex trade market). The issue weighed heavy on her heart, and one year later she was selling everything she owned and heading to India.

She soon realized that there was little to no success of rehabilitation for girls trying to escape trafficking. They would run away, wind up dead, or get re-trafficked. Collaborating with a local rescue agency, Stephanie presented the idea of a social enterprise that could generate income for survivors.

Stephanie began working with girls in aftercare homes, teaching them how to make jewelry, empowering them with skills to rebuild their lives. The jewelry was then sent to the U.S. where it was sold by co-founder Wendy Dailey. The proceeds from the jewelry and donations provided the girls with paychecks, medical care, education, and life skills training. Interest in the program grew and a center was created in Mumbai to accommodate the young women. The number of sanctuaries has grown since and International Sanctuary plans to launch more around the world.

Today International Sanctuary has served over 300 young women, of all ethnicities and backgrounds. International Sanctuary has been the vital piece between rescue and reintegration, ensuring survivors have a stable, healthy, and bright future.

International Sanctuary centers provide a loving, safe community
where survivors can gain confidence and strength.
